Caribbean Stud Poker (also called Five Card Poker) is a popular casino game. Although it seems online casinos pay less attention to poker games than blackjack or roulette, it’s still worth discussing. Ever since online casinos became a thing, poker has always stayed on its path a little, which means that instead of playing poker at an online casino, most people prefer playing games like Caribbean Stud at a dedicated poker site. Whatever you do, it’s merely a preference. Let’s have a look at what Caribbean Stud poker has to offer as a game, what the rules are, and what you need to win.

Like we mentioned above, Caribbean Stud Poker is a Poker game. However, it’s not the same as the traditional poker game as you know it. In conventional poker, the players play against each other. In Caribbean Stud Poker, however, players compete against the house. The game of Caribbean Stud is played with a 52 card deck.
Where can I play this game?
A few of the top developers that are currently offering Caribbean Stud Poker on their sites are BetSoft, which is one of the biggest developers when it comes to casino table games. Other developers that are offering the game are Microgaming, Cryptologic, NetEnt, and Playtech, to name a few. The top developers provide the game that already says a lot about Caribbean Studs’ popularity.
How does the game work?
The game starts when a player places an ‘Ante’ wager, and the dealer gives out 5 cards to both themselves and the players. The dealer keeps all his cards down, except for one. Based on what you see and the value of your cards, you either Fold or Call. If you choose to Call, you have to place a bet that is twice as much the size of the Ante wager. After that, the dealer shows his cards, and based on the value; we know if you’ve won!
Important hands in Caribbean Stud
The hand hierarchy of Caribbean Stud Poker is the same as in poker. Below we’ll list the hands from most powerful to the weakest.
- Royal Flush – You make up a Royal Flush with the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten. Cards all have to be of the same suit.
- Straight Flush – Have a street of 5 cards of the same suit (Example: 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Clubs). In the case that yourself and the dealer both have a Straight Flush, the person with the highest card wins.
- 4 of a Kind – You get 4 of a Kind when you get four cards of matching rank (Example: 7 of Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades). Same rule: if you and the dealer both have 4 of a kind, the one with the highest rank wins.
- Full House – You make up a Full house with three cards of the same rank and two cards of a different but matching rank (Example: 8 of Clubs, Hearts and Diamonds and Jack of Spades and Hearts). Again, if both yourself and the dealer have Full House, the one with the highest rank wins.
- Flush – Five cards of the same suit (Example: Ace, 6, 5, 4, and Queen of Clubs). The Flush once again has the same rule. If both you and the dealer hold a Flush, the highest card wins.
- Straight – five numerically adjacent cards ignoring suit (Example: 7 of Spades, 8 of Spades, 9 of Clubs, 10 of Diamonds and Jack of Diamonds). Where both the player and dealer hold a Straight the hand with the highest card is considered the winner.
- 3 of a Kind – You make up 3 of a kind by getting three cards of the same rank combined with 2 unmatched cards (Example: 9 of Diamonds, Clubs, and Hearts with any two other cards that are not the 9 of Diamonds or a matching pair). The one with the highest rank wins.
- Two Pairs – Have two sets of two matching cards with one unmatched card (Example: 4 of Diamonds and Hearts, 8 Clubs and Diamonds, and a fifth card that doesn’t belong. Again, you compare here who has the highest value of cards. If the combination happens to be exactly the same, the unmatched card decides.
- Pair – Get two matching cards with three unmatched ones. (Example: 6 of Spades and Hearts and any three other cards).
- High Card – Basically you look at the value of your 5 unmatched cards. Which one has the highest value? If you have an Ace in your hand, you’re good. It can happen that both yourself and the dealer have an Ace, in that case, your bets are returned.
All in All: what does Caribbean Stud poker have to offer?
A fun game, for everyone who likes the thrill of poker. Payouts can be steep, that’s also why Caribbean Stud poker still is immensely popular. You can play this game ‘the normal version’ or you can play Caribbean Stud Poker as a liver dealer game. The latter sure promises more action but the choice is up to you.
