European roulette is one of the most popular types of roulette. You can find many different versions of this game, but we prefer the classic game over others. An important reason why European roulette is great to play is because of the low house advantage. That means players have a significantly higher chance of winning than in many other table games. Never played roulette before? You can try out the game for free. That’s a great way to get the hang of the rules and develop a strategy. If you want to learn more about European roulette, then read on. Below we’ll explain the rules and how to bet on roulette.

Roulette revolves around predicting on which number the wheel will land. The large wheel determines the winning number. Once it starts spinning, all you have to do is see on which number from 1 to 36 it lands. Each number is either black or red; there is just one exception, which is number 0. This number comes in the colour green. Besides the wheel, there is a large table which has little pockets with numbers. You make your virtual bet by placing your chips on one of the numbers. When you’re done placing the bet, you click ‘spin’ to start the game. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see whether you’ve won!

House Advantage – European Roulette

If you compare different types of roulette, one thing will stand out about European Roulette. It’s the fact that you will only find one 0 on the wheel. That’s a good thing because the American version of roulette has two 00. The zero represents the house advantage on roulette because whenever the wheel lands on 0, the house gets all the player’s bets. The reason why European roulette is more popular than American roulette is simple: you have a higher chance to win.

Placing bets in European Roulette

There are several ways to place a bet when playing European Roulette. The simplest of them all is the straight bet. To place a straight bet, you bet on only one number with a chip. This is the most straight-forward and widely used bet. However, your winning chances are rather small with this bet. After all, there are 36 numbers on the wheel. In the off chance, you do win; you get 35 times your stake. That means a £5 bet can get you £175 in just one round. The best advice to take when playing roulette is always to spread your chances. You can do that by placing several straight bets, but there are also alternative ways. Below you can find a couple of roulette bet options.

Types of Straight Bets

Straight bet – You place 1 chip on 1 number. Winning gets you x35 your bet.

Split bet – You split between 2 numbers with 1 chip. You do that by placing the chip between 2 numbers, for example, between 7 and 8. Winning gets you x17 your bet.

Street bet – A street bet is where you place a bet on ‘streets’ of 3 numbers that are followed by one another. Place the chip on the line of the first number to make a street bet. Do you get it right? Then you get 11 times your stake.

Sixline – A Sixline lets you place a chip on a line of 6 numbers. Place your chip at the middle line at the bottom. If you got it right, you win 5 times your bet.

Corner bet – A corner bet lets you place your bet on a block of 4 numbers. You do this by making a square on the table with 4 numbers situated beside each other. Place your chip at the middle line where lines meet. If you win the bet, you get 8 times your stake.

Outside bets

Besides placing chips on numbers, roulette also has something called ‘outside bets’. You can take this quite literally because to place these bets you have to put chips on the games’ sideline. Outside bets generally have a high chance of winning, around 50%. That makes outside bets a lot more accessible than the inside bets as explained above, but they also make you significantly less money if you win. Outside chances are nevertheless and nice, low-stake opportunities to win money. You’re free to play European Roulette with only outside bets, although one could argue that it makes the game a lot less exciting. Below we explained a few outside bets.

Red/Black – This is probably the most well-known outside bet. The numbers on the roulette wheel are either black or red, and this bet lets you predict whether the wheel lands on black or red. The winning chance is almost 50% (minus the 0, which is the house advantage). If you get it right, you win x2 your bet.

Even/uneven – Where does the wheel land, an even or uneven number? If you win, you get x2 your bet, the same as the red/black bet.

Dozen – Will the winning number land in the first, second, or third dozen numbers? The dozen bet lets you indicate in which section the wheel will land and gets you 3 times your bet if you win.

Columns – On the right side of the wheel, you’ll see columns 1, 2, and 3. This is the same concept as the Dozen bet, but instead, you will now only place a bet on different numbers. The Column bet gets you x3 your bet just like the Dozen bet.
