Three Card Poker is one of the fastest and easiest poker games at online casinos. You play against the dealer with just three cards, there is no bluffing, and a round takes only seconds. The game offers two ways to play: the main Ante and Play game against the dealer, and the Pair Plus side bet, which pays out on your own hand regardless of what the dealer has. In this guide to Three Card Poker we explain the rules, the hand rankings, the payouts and the simple strategy that gives you the best odds.

How to Play Three Card Poker

A round of Three Card Poker follows these steps:

  • You place an Ante bet, and optionally a Pair Plus bet.
  • You and the dealer each receive three cards. Your cards are face up, the dealer’s are face down.
  • You decide to fold or play. If you fold, you lose your Ante. If you play, you place a Play bet equal to your Ante.
  • The dealer reveals the cards and the hands are compared.

When Does the Dealer Qualify?

The dealer needs at least a Queen-high to qualify:

  • Dealer does not qualify: your Ante pays 1:1 and your Play bet is returned.
  • Dealer qualifies and you win: both your Ante and Play bets pay 1:1.
  • Dealer qualifies and wins: you lose your Ante and Play bets.
  • Tie: both bets are returned.

Hand Rankings in Three Card Poker

With only three cards, the hand rankings are different from regular poker. A straight is harder to get than a flush, so it ranks higher:

RankHand
1Straight flush
2Three of a kind
3Straight
4Flush
5Pair
6High card

Ante Bonus

Many tables pay an Ante Bonus for strong hands, regardless of the dealer’s hand. A typical paytable pays 1:1 for a straight, 4:1 for three of a kind and 5:1 for a straight flush. You receive this bonus even if the dealer qualifies and beats you, as long as you played the hand.

Pair Plus Side Bet

The Pair Plus bet pays out if your three cards contain a pair or better. The dealer’s hand does not matter. A common paytable is:

HandPair Plus payout
Pair1:1
Flush3:1 or 4:1
Straight6:1
Three of a kind30:1
Straight flush40:1

Paytables vary between casinos and providers, and they have a big effect on the house edge of this bet. Always check the paytable before you play.

Strategy: Queen-6-4

The optimal strategy for the Ante and Play game is surprisingly simple: play every hand of Queen-6-4 or better and fold anything lower. In practice, this means you play any pair or better, any hand with a King or Ace, and Queen-high hands with at least a 6 and a 4. Following this rule gives the lowest house edge on the main game, at around 3.4% of the Ante. Pair Plus does not involve any decisions, so its house edge depends only on the paytable.

RTP and House Edge

With optimal strategy, the RTP of the Ante and Play game is around 96.6%. The Pair Plus bet ranges from roughly 93% to 98% RTP, depending on the paytable. Three Card Poker therefore has a higher house edge than blackjack or baccarat, but it is fast, simple and fun.

Three Card Poker vs Caribbean Stud Poker

Both games are played against the dealer without bluffing. Caribbean Stud Poker uses five cards and requires a Call bet of twice your Ante, while Three Card Poker uses three cards and a Play bet equal to your Ante. Three Card Poker is faster and its strategy is easier to remember. Read more about poker games in our guide to online poker.

Playing Three Card Poker in the UK

At UK-licensed casinos, you must verify your age and identity before you can play. Table games usually contribute little or nothing to bonus wagering, so check the terms of any welcome bonus first. Live Three Card Poker tables are also available in many UK live casinos.

Where Three Card Poker Comes From

Three Card Poker was invented in the 1990s by the British game designer Derek Webb, who wanted to create a fast poker game that casinos could offer alongside blackjack and roulette. It started in UK casinos before spreading to the United States, where it became one of the most popular table games in Las Vegas. The combination of a simple main game and an independent side bet proved to be a winning formula, and the game was later adapted for online play and live dealer studios.

Three Card Poker on Mobile

Three Card Poker is ideal for mobile play. There are only a few decisions per round, the cards are large and easy to read, and the buttons for Ante, Play and Fold fit comfortably on a phone screen. Both RNG and live versions run smoothly on iPhone, Android phones and tablets.

Tips for Playing Three Card Poker

  • Follow Queen-6-4: play every hand at or above this level.
  • Check the Pair Plus paytable: a flush paying 4:1 is better than 3:1.
  • Do not over-bet Pair Plus: it is fun, but it is a separate bet with its own edge.
  • Set a budget: rounds are fast, so stakes add up quickly.
