Debit cards are the most widely used way to pay at UK online casinos. Almost every UK-licensed casino accepts Visa Debit and Mastercard Debit, deposits are instant, and many casinos now pay out to debit cards within hours. Since credit cards were banned for gambling in April 2020, your debit card is also the card that sits behind Apple Pay and Google Pay. In this guide we explain how debit card payments work, how fast withdrawals are, what to watch out for with bonuses and which casinos we recommend.

Why Only Debit Cards?
On 14 April 2020, the UK Gambling Commission banned the use of credit cards for online and offline gambling, including through e-wallets funded by a credit card. The aim was to stop people gambling with borrowed money. As a result, UK-licensed casinos only accept debit cards. If a site lets you deposit with a credit card, it is not licensed in the UK. How Debit Card Deposits Work
Depositing with a debit card is simple:
- Open the cashier and choose Visa or Mastercard.
- Enter your card number, expiry date and CVV, or select a saved card.
- Enter the amount and confirm. Your bank may ask you to approve the payment in your banking app (3D Secure).
- The money appears in your casino balance instantly.
The first time you deposit, the casino will also check that the card is in your own name. Most casinos let you save your card for faster deposits later.
Debit Card Withdrawals
Withdrawals to a debit card used to take three to five working days. That has changed. Many UK casinos now use fast payout networks such as Visa Direct and Mastercard Send, which can deliver your winnings within hours, sometimes within minutes, once the casino has approved the request. Mastercard payouts are not always as fast as Visa, depending on the casino and your bank.
The total time you wait depends on two steps:
- Casino processing: the time the casino takes to approve your withdrawal, from instant to around 48 hours.
- Bank processing: with Visa Direct, usually minutes to a few hours; with traditional processing, one to three working days.

Limits and Fees
| Item | Typical range at UK casinos |
|---|---|
| Minimum deposit | £5 to £20 |
| Maximum deposit | Depends on the casino and your deposit limits |
| Minimum withdrawal | £5 to £20 |
| Deposit time | Instant |
| Withdrawal time | Minutes to 3 working days |
| Fees | Usually none from the casino |
Most UK casinos do not charge fees for debit card payments. Your bank may charge a fee if your card is in a foreign currency. Remember that UK casinos must ask you to set deposit limits, and affordability checks can apply to larger amounts.
Debit Cards and Casino Bonuses
Debit cards are almost always accepted for welcome bonuses. Some casinos exclude e-wallets such as Skrill or Neteller from bonus offers, but debit cards are rarely excluded. Since January 2026, wagering requirements on UK casino bonuses are capped at 10x, which makes bonuses much easier to clear than before. Compare current offers on our welcome bonus page.
Debit Cards vs Other Payment Methods
| Method | Deposit | Withdrawal | Bonus eligible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa/Mastercard Debit | Instant | Minutes to 3 days | Almost always |
| PayPal | Instant | Usually within 24 hours | Sometimes excluded |
| Apple Pay | Instant | Usually to your debit card | Usually |
| Pay by Bank/Trustly | Instant | Often same day | Usually |
A debit card is the most universal option. If you prefer not to share your card details with the casino, consider PayPal or Apple Pay, which use your debit card in the background without revealing the card number. Compare all options on our casino payment methods page.
Is It Safe to Use a Debit Card at an Online Casino?
Yes, as long as you choose a UK-licensed casino. Licensed casinos must use encrypted connections and follow strict rules on handling your data. Card payments are protected by 3D Secure, which means your bank asks you to approve the payment. Your bank can also help if there is ever an unauthorised payment. Many UK banks also offer a gambling block on your debit card, which you can switch on in your banking app if you want to stop gambling payments.
The Closed-Loop Rule
UK casinos follow a closed-loop policy: winnings are paid back to the method you used to deposit, where possible. If you deposit with a debit card, your withdrawal will usually go back to the same card. This prevents fraud and money laundering. If you have used several payment methods, the casino may split your withdrawal between them.
Tips for Paying by Debit Card
A few simple habits make debit card payments at online casinos smoother. First, complete the casino’s identity checks early, because withdrawals are only paid once your account is verified. Second, use a card in your own name: casinos will not accept third-party cards, and payments from a card that does not match your account can be blocked. Third, check whether your bank supports fast payouts. Some banks receive Visa Direct payments within minutes, while others may take longer. Finally, keep an eye on your bank statement. Gambling transactions are clearly labelled, which makes it easy to keep track of your spending and spot anything unusual. If you find that you are spending more than planned, switch on your bank’s gambling block or set lower deposit limits in your casino account.
What If My Card Payment Is Declined?
Card payments to casinos are sometimes declined. The most common reasons are a gambling block on your card, insufficient funds, a card that is not in your name, or a bank security check. Check your banking app first, as many banks ask you to approve the payment there. If the problem continues, try another method such as Pay by Bank or contact the casino’s support team.
