Lightning Roulette is one of the most popular live casino games in the UK. Evolution launched it in 2018, and it quickly became a hit by adding a game show twist to classic European Roulette. In every round, lightning strikes between one and five Lucky Numbers, each with a random multiplier of up to 500x. If your straight-up bet lands on a Lucky Number, you win far more than the usual 35 to 1. In this guide to Lightning Roulette we explain the rules, the payouts, the RTP and how it compares with regular roulette.

How Lightning Roulette Works
![]()
Lightning Roulette is played on a standard European Roulette wheel with a single zero, hosted by a live dealer in a stylish black and gold studio. You place your bets as usual, on numbers, colours, columns or any other roulette bet. After betting closes, lightning strikes the table and selects between one and five Lucky Numbers. Each Lucky Number receives a random multiplier between 50x and 500x. Then the dealer spins the ball.
If the ball lands on a Lucky Number and you have a straight-up bet on that number, your bet is paid at the multiplier instead of the standard payout. A £1 straight-up bet on a Lucky Number with a 500x multiplier pays £500, plus your stake.
Payouts in Lightning Roulette
To make room for the multipliers, the payout for a regular straight-up win is lower than usual:
| Bet | Payout |
|---|---|
| Straight up on a Lucky Number | 50:1 to 500:1 |
| Straight up on a regular number | 29:1 |
| Split | 17:1 |
| Street | 11:1 |
| Corner | 8:1 |
| Six line | 5:1 |
| Dozen or column | 2:1 |
| Red/black, odd/even, high/low | 1:1 |
All bets other than straight-up bets pay the same as in regular European Roulette. Only straight-up bets are affected by the Lucky Numbers.
RTP and House Edge
The RTP of Lightning Roulette is around 97.30% for most bets, the same as regular European Roulette. For straight-up bets, Evolution lists a slightly lower RTP of about 97.10%, because the reduced 29:1 payout is balanced by the chance of a big multiplier. The house edge is therefore similar to standard roulette, but the distribution of wins is different: straight-up bets win less often in a normal way, but can occasionally pay hundreds of times your stake.
Strategy: Inside vs Outside Bets
If you mainly play outside bets such as red/black or dozens, Lightning Roulette plays almost exactly like regular roulette. The lightning only matters for straight-up bets. Players who want a shot at a big multiplier usually spread small bets across several single numbers. Keep in mind that this increases your total stake per round, and that the multipliers are random. No strategy can change the house edge, so set a budget and stick to it. Read more in our guide to online roulette.
The Live Experience
Lightning Roulette is streamed in HD from Evolution’s studios, with professional dealers and dramatic lighting effects every time lightning strikes. You can chat with the dealer, see results history and use the racetrack for call bets. The game is fast, with rounds taking less than a minute. Lightning Roulette Variants
The success of the original led to several spin-offs. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette adds Chain Lightning and higher multipliers. Lightning concepts have also been applied to other Evolution games, such as Lightning Blackjack, Lightning Baccarat and Lightning Dice. Each variant has its own payouts and RTP, so check the game rules before you play.
Playing Lightning Roulette in the UK
At UK-licensed casinos, you must verify your age and identity before you can play. Live casino games usually contribute little or nothing to bonus wagering, so check the terms before using a welcome bonus. Since January 2026, wagering requirements on UK bonuses are capped at 10x.
Lightning Roulette on Mobile
The game is fully optimised for iPhone, Android phones and tablets. The live stream adapts to your connection, and the betting layout is designed for touchscreens. See our guide to mobile gambling in the UK.
Is Lightning Roulette Better Than Regular Roulette?
Neither version is better in terms of value, because the house edge is almost the same. The difference is in the experience. Regular European Roulette offers predictable payouts, which suits players who mainly bet on colours, odd or even, or dozens. Lightning Roulette is aimed at players who enjoy betting on single numbers and like the idea of an occasional big win. The lightning effects and multipliers also make each round more of a show. If you only place outside bets, there is little reason to choose Lightning Roulette over a standard table, apart from the atmosphere.
How Often Do Lucky Numbers Hit?
With 37 numbers on the wheel and one to five Lucky Numbers per round, the ball lands on a Lucky Number in a minority of rounds. Even then, you only benefit if you have a straight-up bet on that exact number. This is why big Lightning Roulette wins are memorable but rare. Treat the multipliers as a bonus rather than something you can count on, and keep your straight-up bets within your budget.
Tips for Playing Lightning Roulette
- Understand the trade-off: regular straight-up wins pay 29:1 instead of 35:1.
- Outside bets work as normal: if you only bet on colours or dozens, the lightning does not affect you.
- Keep straight-up bets small: multipliers are rare, so spread your budget carefully.
- Set a budget: fast rounds can add up quickly.
