Slingo combines two of the most popular games in the UK: slots and bingo. You spin a reel, mark off numbers on a bingo-style grid and try to complete as many lines as possible before you run out of spins. It is easy to learn, more interactive than a regular slot and has become a fixture at UK casinos and bingo sites. In this guide we explain how Slingo works, what the special symbols do, which Slingo games are the most popular and how to play smart.

Slingo was invented in the United States in the 1990s by Sal Falciglia, who combined the reel of a slot machine with the grid of a bingo card. The game first became popular online in the early days of internet gaming. Today the Slingo brand is owned by Gaming Realms, which develops Slingo Originals and works with other studios to turn famous slot and TV brands into Slingo games. Its simple rules and small element of choice made it a natural fit for UK casinos and bingo sites, where Slingo now has its own section next to slots and bingo rooms.
How to play Slingo
Every Slingo game follows the same basic structure:
- The grid: a 5 x 5 grid with 25 numbers, like a bingo card.
- The reel: a row of five reels below the grid. Each reel matches one column of the grid.
- Spins: you get a set number of spins per game, usually around ten.
- Marking numbers: when a number on the reel matches a number in the column above, it is marked off.
- Slingos: a completed horizontal, vertical or diagonal line is called a Slingo.
There are 12 possible Slingos on the grid: five rows, five columns and two diagonals. The more Slingos you complete, the higher you climb on the prize ladder next to the grid. Completing all 12 is called a full house and pays the top prize.
Special symbols in Slingo
Instead of a number, the reel can also show special symbols:
| Symbol | What it does |
|---|---|
| Joker | Lets you mark any number in the column above it |
| Super Joker | Lets you mark any number anywhere on the grid |
| Free Spin | Gives you one extra spin at no cost |
| Devil | Blocks a number or takes away part of your prize, depending on the game |
| Cherub | Cancels out a Devil |
| Coin | Pays an instant cash prize in many games |
Jokers and Super Jokers are where the strategy comes in. You choose which number to mark, so the right choice can complete one or even two Slingos at once. Most games highlight the best options, but you can always choose yourself.
Extra spins
When your standard spins are used up, many Slingo games offer extra spins. Each extra spin has a price, and that price depends on how close you are to completing more Slingos. If you are one number away from a big step on the prize ladder, the next spin will cost more. The cost is always shown before you buy, so you can decide whether it is worth it.
Extra spins are an important part of the game, but they are also where costs can rise quickly. Set a limit for extra spins before you start, and do not feel obliged to keep buying.
Popular Slingo games in the UK
Slingo has grown from one game into a large collection, with many titles based on famous slots:
- Slingo Riches: the original Slingo game and still a favourite thanks to its simple, classic gameplay.
- Slingo Rainbow Riches: the Slingo version of the Irish-themed Rainbow Riches slot, with bonus features inspired by the original.
- Slingo Starburst: the colourful gems of Starburst on a Slingo grid, with expanding wild features.
- Slingo Deal or No Deal: based on the TV game show, with a banker offer when you reach a bonus.
- Slingo Centurion: a Roman-themed version of the classic Inspired slot.
New Slingo games are released regularly, often based on popular slots or well-known brands. Most UK casinos and bingo sites have a dedicated Slingo section.
RTP and volatility of Slingo
The RTP of most Slingo games is in a similar range to regular slots, often around 95% to 96% for the base game. The RTP of extra spins can differ from the base game, and it can vary per spin. You can find the exact figures in the game information of each title.
The volatility depends on the game. Classic Slingo games give regular small wins as you complete a few Slingos, while the full house and the bonus features provide the bigger prizes. Games based on high volatility slots usually have larger but less frequent wins.
Slingo versus slots and bingo
| Slingo | Slots | Bingo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gameplay | Reel and grid, you make choices with Jokers | Spin and wait for the result | Tickets are marked automatically |
| Game length | Around ten spins plus extra spins | One spin at a time | One game per draw |
| Social | Played on your own | Played on your own | Chat rooms and hosts |
| Skill element | Small, through Joker choices | None | None |
If you enjoy the excitement of slots but want a little more control, Slingo is a good fit. Players who love the social atmosphere of a bingo room will find more of that in our guide to online bingo.
Slingo in the UK
Slingo games at UK casinos are licensed and tested like any other casino game. You must be 18 or over, credit cards cannot be used and you have access to deposit limits and self-exclusion through GamStop. Since January 2026, bonus wagering is capped at 10x. Some welcome offers and free spins can be used on Slingo games, but many bonuses only apply to slots, so always check the terms. Compare current offers on our welcome bonus page.
Is Slingo a game of skill?
Slingo has a small element of choice, but it is still a game of chance. The numbers on the reel are random, and so are the Jokers, Devils and other special symbols. The only decisions you make are where to place a Joker and whether to buy extra spins. A good Joker choice can complete an extra Slingo, so it is worth taking a moment before you tap. Over many games, however, these choices make only a small difference compared with the luck of the reel. Think of Slingo as a more interactive slot rather than a game you can master with strategy.
Tips for playing Slingo
- Use Jokers wisely: pick numbers that complete lines or help with more than one Slingo.
- Set an extra spin limit: decide before the game how many extra spins you are willing to buy.
- Watch the extra spin price: a high price usually means a big prize is close, but there is no guarantee.
- Try different games: Slingo games differ in features and volatility, so find one that suits you.
- Play on mobile: the grid works well on a phone screen in portrait mode.
