The calculator is built to be quick. You do not need to know the maths behind multiple bets to use it.

  • Choose your bet type. Pick singles, a double, treble, accumulator or a full cover bet such as a Trixie, Yankee or Lucky 15. The calculator adds the right number of selections automatically.
  • Enter your stake. This is the stake per bet. A £1 Yankee is 11 bets, so it costs £11 in total.
  • Set each way and place terms. Switch on each way if you want the place part too, and choose the place terms the bookmaker offers, such as 1/5 odds for three places.
  • Add your odds and results. Type the odds for each selection and mark it as won, placed, lost or void. A void selection or non-runner is treated as odds of 1.0, just as bookmakers settle it.

The totals update instantly: the number of bets, your total stake, the potential return and the profit or loss.

Odds converter: fractional, decimal and implied probability

UK bookmakers show odds in two ways. Fractional odds are the traditional British format, while decimal odds are standard on betting exchanges and in most of Europe. Both say exactly the same thing in a different form.

  • Fractional to decimal: divide the first number by the second and add 1. So 5/2 becomes 2.5 + 1 = 3.50.
  • Decimal to fractional: subtract 1 and turn the rest into a fraction. So 4.00 becomes 3/1.
  • Implied probability: divide 100 by the decimal odds. Odds of 4.00 imply a 25% chance.
FractionalDecimalImplied probability
1/21.5066.7%
Evens2.0050.0%
6/42.5040.0%
2/13.0033.3%
5/23.5028.6%
3/14.0025.0%
5/16.0016.7%
10/111.009.1%

Implied probability is the most useful number of the three. It tells you how likely the price says something is. If you believe a horse has a better chance than its odds suggest, the bet has value. Add up the implied probabilities of every runner in a race and you will get more than 100%. That surplus is the bookmaker's margin, also called the overround.

How bet returns are calculated

Every bet calculation starts with the same rule: the return is your stake multiplied by the decimal odds. A £10 single at 3/1 (4.00) returns £40, which is £30 profit plus your £10 stake back.

Multiple bets simply multiply the odds together. A £5 double at 2/1 (3.00) and 6/4 (2.50) has combined odds of 7.50, so it returns £37.50. With a treble or accumulator you keep multiplying, which is why small stakes can produce big returns.

Full cover bets such as a Yankee are a bundle of doubles, trebles and bigger multiples. The calculator works out every combination, adds up the winning ones and shows you one total. Doing that by hand for a Lucky 31 means checking 31 separate bets, which is exactly why a calculator saves time.

Each way returns

An each way bet is two bets of equal stake: one to win and one to place. The place part pays at a fraction of the win odds, for example 1/5. A £5 each way bet on a 10/1 winner returns £55 for the win part plus £15 for the place part (10/1 at 1/5 is 2/1), so £70 in total from a £10 stake. Read our full each way guide for place terms by race type.

What the calculator does not include

Bookmakers settle some bets with extra rules. Our calculator gives a clean estimate, so keep these points in mind:

  • Rule 4 deductions: when a horse is withdrawn late, winning bets in that race are reduced by a set amount per pound.
  • Dead heats: if two horses tie, your stake is split and paid at full odds on half of it.
  • Bookmaker bonuses: many bookmakers add extras to Lucky 15 bets, such as double odds when only one selection wins. These are not included.
  • Best Odds Guaranteed: if you take an early price and the starting price is bigger, a Best Odds Guaranteed bookmaker pays the bigger price.

Common betting calculator mistakes

Most errors in working out returns come from a few simple slips:

  • Mixing up stake per bet and total stake. A £10 Lucky 15 usually means £10 per bet, so £150 in total. Always check the total stake line.
  • Forgetting the stake is returned. Fractional odds show profit, decimal odds show the full return. 3/1 and 4.00 are the same price.
  • Ignoring each way costs. Turning on each way doubles the number of bets and the total stake.
  • Leaving void legs as losers. A non-runner is not a loser. Mark it as void and the bet is settled on the remaining selections.

Where to place your bet

Once you know what a bet could pay, it is worth comparing where you place it. The same bet can return more at a bookmaker with better odds, Best Odds Guaranteed on racing or a welcome offer for new customers. These are the three sites we currently rate highest:

Bet responsibly

A calculator shows what a bet could win, but it cannot change the odds. Most bets lose, and the more selections you add, the less likely the bet is to land. Set a budget before you start, only stake what you can afford to lose and never chase losses. If gambling stops being fun, free and confidential help is available from BeGambleAware and the National Gambling Helpline.

How do I calculate my betting returns?

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds. A £10 bet at 3/1 (4.00 in decimal) returns £40, which includes your £10 stake. For multiple bets, multiply the decimal odds of every selection together and then multiply by the stake.

How do I convert fractional odds to decimal?

Divide the first number by the second and add 1. For example, 5/2 is 2.5 plus 1, which gives decimal odds of 3.50.

What does implied probability mean?

It is the chance of an outcome according to the odds. Divide 100 by the decimal odds: odds of 4.00 imply a 25% chance.

How does the calculator handle non-runners?

Mark the selection as void. It is then settled at odds of 1.0, so a double with one non-runner becomes a single on the other selection, just as a bookmaker would settle it.

Does the calculator include Rule 4 and bookmaker bonuses?

No. Returns are estimates before Rule 4 deductions, dead heats and bookmaker bonuses such as Lucky 15 consolation odds. Always check the final figure on your bet slip.
