The Scottish Premiership has 12 teams. Each team plays the others three times, making 33 matches. After that, the league splits into two halves of six teams:

  • Top six: the teams fight for the title and European places.
  • Bottom six: the teams battle to avoid relegation.

Each team then plays five more matches against the teams in its half, for a total of 38 games. Points carry over, and a team in the bottom six cannot finish above seventh, even if it ends up with more points than a team in the top six.

At the bottom, the last-placed team is relegated to the Championship, while the 11th-placed team goes into a play-off against a team from the Championship.

Why the split matters for betting

The split changes the fixture list late in the season. Teams in the top six play each other more often, while the bottom six face direct relegation rivals. That affects markets such as top six finish, relegation and points totals. Before the split, look closely at the fixtures each team has left and how many points separate sixth and seventh.

The Old Firm

Celtic and Rangers have dominated Scottish football for generations. Their meetings, known as the Old Firm derby, are among the most intense and most bet-on matches in the UK. Old Firm matches often have tight odds, plenty of cards and a high-pressure atmosphere. Popular markets include:

  • Match result and double chance.
  • Both teams to score.
  • Total cards and first card.
  • First goalscorer and anytime goalscorer.

The big two do not always have it their own way, though. In 2025-26 Hearts pushed Celtic all the way, and the title was only decided on the final day, when Celtic beat Hearts 3-1 to win the league.

Handicaps when the big two play

Celtic and Rangers are usually short-priced favourites against the rest of the league. Backing them on the match result often offers little value. An Asian handicap of -1.5 or -2 goals gives better odds if you expect a clear win. Alternatively, look at the “without” markets, which let you bet on the league table without the big two.

Goals and cards in Scottish football

Goal patterns differ across the Scottish game. Matches involving Celtic or Rangers often feature one dominant team and a high number of goals, while games between mid-table and bottom-six sides tend to be tighter. Derbies such as the Edinburgh derby between Hearts and Hibernian and the Dundee derby add another layer, with high emotion that often shows in the card count. When you bet on goals or cards, look at recent head-to-head matches, each team’s average goals per game and the referee appointed for the match. Late-season matches after the split can also be more open, as teams with nothing left to play for take more risks.

Scottish cup competitions

Scottish football has two main domestic cups:

  • Scottish Cup: the oldest national cup competition in Scotland, with the final at Hampden Park in May.
  • Scottish League Cup: played in the first half of the season, with a group stage in summer and knockout rounds in the autumn.

Cup matches can produce upsets, especially in the early rounds when lower-league teams face Premiership opposition. Cup ties that go to extra time and penalties are settled differently depending on the market, so check whether your bet is on 90 minutes or on the team to qualify.

The Scottish Championship and lower leagues

Below the Premiership are the Championship, League One and League Two. These leagues have fewer televised matches and less media coverage, which can create value for punters who follow them closely. Bookmakers still offer result, goals and handicap markets on most matches.

Scottish football betting tips

  • Respect home advantage. Smaller grounds and passionate crowds can make some away trips tough, even for strong teams.
  • Watch the weather. Winter conditions and heavy pitches can lead to tighter, lower-scoring games.
  • Look beyond the big two. The battle for the top three, the top six and survival often offer better value than title markets.
  • Check European fixtures. Teams playing in Europe in midweek may rotate players at the weekend.
  • Use in-play markets. Scottish matches are widely covered in-play. See our in-play betting guide.
  • Build smart accas. Combining short-priced favourites in an accumulator looks attractive, but one upset ruins it. Use our acca calculator to check returns.

Scottish football and the transfer window

Squad changes can shift the balance of power quickly in Scottish football. Clubs outside the big two often rely on loan players and short-term signings, so a team’s strength can change a lot between August and January. Before betting on outright markets, look at who has arrived and who has left in the transfer window, and how new players have settled in. Early-season results can be misleading if a club has only just completed its squad.

Scotland at international level

The Scotland national team has a loyal following, and qualifying campaigns for major tournaments always attract plenty of bets. Markets on Scotland matches include the usual result and goals markets, plus outright markets on qualification. As with club football, look at form, injuries and home advantage at Hampden Park before you bet.

Where to bet on Scottish football

A good bookmaker for Scottish football covers all four SPFL divisions, offers Old Firm specials and has strong in-play markets.
