A snooker match is played over a set number of frames, for example best of 11 or best of 19. The first player to win the majority of frames wins the match. At the World Championship, the final is played over best of 35 frames across two days.
Because matches are long and there is no draw, the match winner market is simple. But snooker also offers many other markets, from frame handicaps to century breaks, which add depth for punters who follow the game closely.
Popular snooker betting markets
| Market | What you bet on | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Match winner | Who wins the match | The most popular bet |
| Frame handicap | A player wins with a frames start | Better odds on strong favourites |
| Correct score | The exact frame score | Big odds, especially in longer matches |
| Total frames | Over or under a number of frames | Useful when you expect a close match |
| Century breaks | Whether there will be a century, or how many | Depends on the players’ break-building |
| Highest break | Over or under a break score | Popular in-play market |
| Maximum 147 | A maximum break in a match or tournament | Rare, so long odds |
| Outright winner | Who wins the tournament | Each way often available |
Frame handicap betting
When a top player faces a lower-ranked opponent, the match odds can be very short. A frame handicap, such as -3.5 frames, gives you better odds if you expect a comfortable win. The other way round, backing the underdog with +3.5 frames can be good value if you expect a close match.
Century and break markets
Century break markets are a snooker speciality. Long matches between attacking players often produce several centuries, while tactical matches may produce none. Look at each player’s centuries per frame across recent tournaments when you bet on these markets.
The snooker calendar
| Event | When | Where | Format of the final |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK Championship | Late November to early December | York | Best of 19 |
| The Masters | January | Alexandra Palace, London | Best of 19 |
| World Championship | Mid-April to early May | Crucible Theatre, Sheffield | Best of 35 |
| Other ranking events | Throughout the season | UK, Europe, China and the Middle East | Varies |
The UK Championship, the Masters and the World Championship together form the Triple Crown, the three most prestigious events in snooker. The World Championship is by far the biggest betting event of the season.
How the World Championship works
The World Championship is the longest and most demanding event in snooker, which makes it a special case for betting. The main draw at the Crucible has 32 players: the top 16 seeds and 16 qualifiers who come through several qualifying rounds. Match lengths grow as the tournament goes on:
| Round | Format |
|---|---|
| First round | Best of 19 frames |
| Second round | Best of 25 frames |
| Quarter-finals | Best of 25 frames |
| Semi-finals | Best of 33 frames |
| Final | Best of 35 frames |
Longer matches reduce the role of luck, so the stronger player wins more often than in short-format events. Qualifiers can still cause upsets in the first round, especially when they arrive in good form after winning their qualifying matches. The long sessions also test stamina and concentration, which is why experience at the Crucible counts for a lot.
Snooker betting tips
- Look at the format. Short matches, such as best of 7, are more unpredictable than long matches. Underdogs win more often in short formats.
- Check recent form. A player’s results in the last few tournaments say more than their world ranking.
- Consider the venue. Some players thrive at the Crucible, while others struggle with the long sessions and pressure.
- Study break-building. For century markets, look at how often a player makes 100+ breaks.
- Watch the session. In multi-session matches, the score after the first session gives valuable information for in-play bets.
- Be careful with accumulators. Big favourites do lose, especially in short-format rounds. Use our acca calculator to check what a multiple really pays.
Snooker statistics to watch
- Pot success: the share of attempted pots that go in. High pot success usually means fewer chances for the opponent.
- Long pot success: how often a player converts long pots, which often opens up frames.
- Safety success: how well a player wins tactical exchanges, which matters in tight matches.
- Centuries per frame: the key number for century break markets.
- Frames won in a deciding frame: shows who holds their nerve when matches go the distance.
These numbers are published by many snooker statistics services. Combine them with recent form and head-to-head records for a clearer picture.
In-play snooker betting
Snooker is one of the best sports for in-play betting. Matches last for hours, with natural pauses between frames and sessions. You can bet on the next frame, frame handicaps, the match winner and break markets as the match unfolds. If you watch the match, you can see things the numbers do not show, such as a player who looks tired or out of rhythm.
Outright betting on snooker
Outright markets let you bet on the tournament winner. For the World Championship, these markets open months in advance. Each way terms often pay the two finalists or the four semi-finalists at a fraction of the odds. Look at the draw: a strong player in a tough section of the draw may be worth less than their odds suggest.
Snooker and the UK
Snooker has deep roots across the UK. Some of the most successful players in the sport’s history have come from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the big events are a fixture on British television. The Welsh Open and the Scottish Open are part of the ranking calendar, so there are events close to home for snooker fans across the country.
Snooker each way and place betting
Each way betting is common on snooker outrights. A typical structure pays the winner at full odds and the runner-up at half the odds, although some bookmakers pay both semi-finalists at a quarter of the odds instead. Each way works best on players at bigger prices with a favourable draw. Check the terms before you bet, as they differ between bookmakers and tournaments. Our each way calculator shows what the place part is worth at different fractions.
